History of Inland Meats
Inland Meats Inc has been serving the Greater Spokane Area, and other areas of the Inland Northwest
since 1932. Its founder Mike Guioddi, was of Sweedish decent. Originally Inland Meats opened up on a
very popular corner in Downtown Spokane. This location, at the corner of Riverside and Browne (mostly
known as Thudpuckers and now is the location of the new America West Building), would be the
headquarters as the business continued to grow.
In 1952 things would change for the better, and for good. A young man by the name of Larry Mullenix
would go to work for the business, just starting out as a kid. Eventually Larry would get a delivery route
up to Sandpoint, Idaho. After having his route for a couple of years, Larry had the idea to start up his own
side business, buying product from Inland Meats and selling it to customers up in Sandpoint.
As his business grew, Larry would start to buy in to Inland Meats, little bits at a time. Once he saved up
enough money, he bought the business outright and took over as president in 1967. From the start,
Larry had trouble getting the production area of the building to be under USDA control. This led to the
purchase of a separate facility, just a few blocks down the road, between Riverside and Main. This new
building was under USDA control, and became the production part of the business while other
operations continued at the original location.
Business would then continue as normal until 1973. This would be a time in which Inland Meats would
then go back to being in one building. Larry would build the new building on a plot of land in the outer
parts of Spokane, in Spokane County, on Trent Ave. This new building would be over 10,000 square feet,
and at the time cost about $250,000 to build. Production was once again in the same building. One
change in the way the business would be ran, is that there would no longer be slaughtering or cooking at
the new facility.
Larry, along with wife Nancy, would have four children, one girl Michelle, and three boys Mike, Dan, and
Chuck. These three boys would enter in to the meat business, and join their father. Mike and Chuck
would stay in the now "Family Business" for many years, until eventually going off and starting up
businesses of their own, much like their father. Dan would stay as vice president, and much like Larry
once did, buy in to the company a little at a time. Finally in 2004, Dan would take over as owner and
president of Inland Meats. Dan, along with his wife Cindy, would have two boys of their own, Troy and
Taylor.
The latest change in the company deals with the partnership with URM Food Service. In March of 2005,
URM bought out Food Service, and Inland Meats moved from its old location on Trent in Spokane Valley,
to the former Food Service Building in the city of Spokane. Inland Meats would stay as a sole
proprietorship, but at the same time be doing business with its partner URM. Now along with having
delivery to many areas of the Northwest, Inland Meats is a proud partner with URM, expanding the
business on a much larger scale. New operations are taking place in a much larger building, almost
twice the size of the old plant at nearly 20,000 square feet of space. Also, Inland Meats now employs
over 25 full-time people. The year 2007 represented the 75th year of business in the Greater Inland
Northwest, Spokane area, and 40th year of having the business in the Mullenix Family.
Even with the recent downturn in the economy and being a family business, Inland Meats continues to
provide our customers with the finest quality products and friendly customer service, and will continue to
do so for many years to come.
